March 21, 2022 / Feature Stan Sport signals start of new era for venues
Already one of the year’s big sporting months, March carries extra interest in 2022 for those keeping watch on the Australian sports broadcast landscape.
The Nine Entertainment owned Stan Sport is driving its commercial push into Australian venues, by offering its maiden pay-per-view combat event.
The fight between Barry Hall and Sonny Bill Williams on March 23 will be popular with fans - and as always, many will be looking to catch it at their local.

The new Stan Sport subscription package for venues is different to others, in that it delivers its product via the internet, in what’s commonly referred to as a “stream”.
While streaming is now the preference of billions of consumers around the world, it does require some additional set-up time for venues.
“The first couple of times, obviously like everything new, it was a challenge,” said Andrew Robinson from Coogee Bay Hotel.
The venue is succesfully switching to Stan Sport rugby highlights on their big screen at various times during the week, allowing them to showcase the content live, large and loud.
Robinson's team purchased their own Telstra box, to be able to easily split the Stan Sport feed, via a HDMI cable, when required.
“We know what’s programmed and we will go up ten minutes prior to that and we will remove the Foxtel HDMI and put in the Stan HDMI,”
“Staff will know what time it is and we just have to be mindful of the time and go in and then go in and manually change it over,”
Sportsyear provides the Coogee Bay Hotel staff with a fully automated, custom sports schedule which includes when Stan Sport highlights should be put on the big screen.
Stan Sport Director of Sport Ben Kimber says hundreds of venues have now subscribed to his commercial service since it was launched late last year.
“We’ve already got a bunch of hotels on board,” he said.
“We provide basic set up instructions for what we think is the best way to get out our product [installed] and we’re always there to help,”
Kimber says the versatility of a live stream is something that venues should embrace, as they consider how to integrate Stan Sport content.
Despite having to deal with the technical demands of streaming, Sportsyear Co-Founder Patrick Galloway says the Australian hospitality industry should take heart.
“Stan Sport has a strong content offer for leading venues, with marquee rugby along with all four tennis Majors,”
“Ultimately, venues will be the winner from Stan Event’s streaming entry into the market because with more competition, will come better pricing.”
“A much more dynamic broadcast future awaits and Sportsyear is the perfect tool for venues like Coogee Bay Hotel, who want to take full advantage.”
